Free Electronic Waste Recycling Collections in May

The Papio NRD and the Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council will host four free electronic waste recycling collections in the month of May. These collections are a great way to keep electronics out of the waste stream. The events allow for free disposal of computers, monitors, printers, office equipment, TVs, phones, radios, audio/video equipment, and small electronic devices. Each Papio NRD Field Office will host a collection as follows:

Tekamah, May 23rd, 10am – 1pm, 539 South 13th Street

Blair, May 23rd, 3pm – 6pm, 1060 Wilbur Street

Dakota City, May 25th, 10am – 1pm, 1505 Broadway Street

Walthill, May 25th, 3pm – 6pm, 106 South Costello Street

Grant funding is provided through the Litter Reduction & Recycling Incentive Grant Program, Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy.

Record Turnout for Scrap Electronics Collections

A total of 177 vehicles – a record turnout – participated in the scrap electronics collection held recently at the USDA Service Center in Dakota City.

Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District (NRD), USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff, Nebraska Loess Hills Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D) members, and other community volunteers assisted with half-day event.

Other collections were also held in the communities of Walthill, Tekamah, and Blair.  The collections were free of charge to local Nebraska residents and businesses.  Funding was provided through the Litter Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grant, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) and Papio-Missouri River NRD.  Midwest Electronic Recovery of Clive, Iowa, was the disposal contractor and is only one of a few companies certified for destruction and recycling of banking, medical/hospital, and governmental agency information.

Free Scrap Tire Collection on August 24

Free scrap tire collection! The Lower Elkhorn NRD, Papio-Missouri River NRD, and Nebraska Loess Hills RC&D Council will have a free scrap tire collection on Friday, August 24, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon) at the Cuming County Fairgrounds in West Point, NE.

This collection will accept all sizes of car, truck, semi and tractor tires. Each load is limited to 100 tires. No rims will be accepted so ALL tires must be off rim.  Tires cannot be accepted from any business which charges a tire disposal fee.  Do not leave vehicles unattended in line. Limited unloading help will be available, so plan to unload your own. The collection ends at noon, and the gates will be locked at that time, so be sure to arrive before 12:00 p.m. (noon).

The 10 county collection area includes Burt, Colfax, Cuming, Dakota, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, Stanton, Thurston, and Washington counties.  Residents and businesses which do not charge tire disposal fees can dispose of tires at this collection.  Vehicles must use Mill Street to access the fairgrounds. From Hwy 275 turn west on 13th Street then head south on Mill Street. Loads with less than 20 tires are encouraged to arrive during the last 90 minutes of the collection for a shorter wait time.

Champlin Tire Recycling will process tires collected during the event.  This processing includes repair and retread of salvageable casings, reclamation of tires meeting used tire specifications and the production of park benches, picnic tables, and feed bunks. Funding for this free collection is provided through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.
