The canopy above you is made up largely of Black Walnut Trees! These giants provide benefits to both humans and wildlife alike. The leaves and nuts provide food to squirrels, raccoons, turkey, and whitetail deer! These trees provide us with adequate shade, lower energy costs, and their walnuts are often added to desserts or salads. Black Walnut Trees are found primarily in eastern Nebraska along river-edge woodlands. Black Walnut Trees are available through the Papio Missouri River NRD Tree Program, check out this link for further information: https://www.nrdnet.org/tree-program. Additional links below detail the Black Walnut Tree profile, along with another NRD program in which the Black Walnut is available to enhance wildlife habitat!
